Mahi-mahi fishing trips in videos and pictures. Mahi Mahi has several other names such as dolphin-fish, dorado, rakingo, calitos, maverikos or lampuka. Mahi is the Hawaiian word for "strong" and is an appropriate name for this dolphin fish. The current IGFA all tackle record is 39.91 kilograms (88lb), caught in 1998 in Exuma Bahamas. The previous record was 87 pounds and was caught in Papagallo Gulf, Costa Rica in 1976.

Mahi Mahi are a beautiful colored fish with bright greenish blue above, yellow on sides, with capability of flashing purple, chartreuse, and a wide range of other colors. When the fish is caught and brought out of the water, these vivid colours are initially very bright, but fade quickly after it dies.

Mahi-mahi are highly sought for both sport fishing and commercial purposes especially popular in restaurants. . Sport fishermen seek mahi-mahi due to their beauty, size, food quality, and healthy population.

Mahi-mahi can be found many places in the world such as the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica on the west coast of North and South America, the Gulf of Mexico the Atlantic coast of Florida, Southeast Asia, Hawaii to name a few.

Dolphin are one of the fastest growing fish, but have a short life span. They are thought to live no more than 5 years with the males growing faster and usually live longer than the females. They are also a fast swimming fish reaching speeds of about 50 knots which allows them to go after faster bait fish.

Since it is uncommon to catch a Mahi Mahi over 50 pounds, maximum of 50 pound gear is more than adequate trolling for mahi-mahi. Trolling for mahi-mahi is a favored method. Many charter outfitters will seek frigate-birds to find locations mahi-mahi's or look for floating debris in the water. Setting a line with many hooks on one line is a common set up, however, you need to check out the local fishing regulations if this is legal. Mahi mahi are excellent fighting fish and will give the sport-fisherman a thrill with long runs and will often leap out of the water.

Mahi Mahi has got to be one of the uglier fish out there. I am planing a trip to the Florida panhandle. I have been reading this blog on fishing reports. http://www.pensacolafishingreports.com I am so excited to go.
