Northern Pike is known by many other names such as Jack, Slough Sharks, Snakes, Gators, Jackfish and so on. Pike are found in freshwater lakes throughout the Northern Hemisphere including North America, Russia and Europe.

The largest Northern Pike by weight was caught in Germany with a length of 58 inches and weighing in at 67 pounds (31 kg). The longest Pike on record measured 60 inches (152 cm) and weighed in at 61 pounds. The largest caught in North America weighed in at 46 pounds 2 oz - caught in Great Sacandaga Lake in New York State.

Ice Fishing Tips

What type of line should I use?- It depends! - If you are fishing for various species and you have large Northern Pike in the lake, then I would suggest a minimum of 12 pound test with a 20 pound leader at the end. If the lake only produces small Northerns, then I would go with lighter line and leader so that you can attract other species of fish. If I'm just going after huge pike, I don't play around with small line. I have used bungee cord with a 36" - 45 pound test leader on the one end and the other end is a cut off hockey stick. When I get a big Northern Pike, I can handle it with my bare hands with ease and not worried about the line or leader snapping. I also don't worry if it can see the leader or bungee cord because I believe the pike is fixed upon my spoon or bait.

Shelter- I like fishing with my family, therefore, I like the larger 4-6 man shelters. Though I don't always sit and fish in the shelter, it is a great place to store your gear, shelter from the wind, keep the kids warm, and use my underwater camera. The shelter I recently purchased is the Headquarter 6 man hub tent made by Frabill. The size of this tent is 140" L x 70" W x 80" H and weighs 40 pounds with a cost of less than $330. What I like about this shelter, it takes less than 1 minute to set up.

Fishing Lures and Bait - This really depends on the lake, time of year, how active the fish are feeding and the size of the fish. Pike are aggressive predators and will take almost anything. I'm going to let you in on a secret for catching big Northerns that I learned from some local aboriginal fisherman. When you catch and keep your first Northern Pike, cut a strip from the white belly of the pike. I used a piece about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Place at the end of a large spoon and jig aggressively with 1 foot or more pulls and let it flutter down. I find this really attracts the pike and many times catch them on the pull up.
